WHAT’S THE ISSUE
With the free upgrade to windows 10 popup, it may seem simple and worth trying to do yourself. But the real problem is what they’re not telling you. Quite often I run into computers or laptops where the drivers are not able to run on windows 10. This results in losing the ability to use the webcam, wireless internet, and sometimes even the mouse and keyboard. The system may even crash due to bad drivers.
Everyone knows the saying, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” So why does Microsoft & Apple release a new operating system every time we turn our head?
As of April 8, 2014, Windows XP is dead. Microsoft is no longer patching it for security vulnerabilities or offering end-user support. This leaves XP users prone to becoming infected very easily and quickly.
I will often come across businesses that are still running XP and I have to warn them about the danger of such a practice. It’s a rough road to making the change. Windows XP machines were able to run on a fraction of resources that Windows 7-10 require. They must now buy a new computer, and now have the software reinstalled or buy new software that is compatible, and get the files transferred to the new PC.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Why does Microsoft & Apple operate like this? There is always a push to create new features, a new interface, and a new way to do things. While this may or may not be something everyone wants, it generally creates problems for most.
Over the last 6 years, Microsoft has released 4 new operating systems (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, & and now the free upgrade to windows 10). That’s crazy!
A lot of users never think to make sure their software will work with the next operating system before they take the free upgrade. And a lot of the time it doesn’t! Now they are stuck with a new operating system that may look cool, but they’re unable to continue doing any work on it.
WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
If this process scares you, that’s not a bad thing. You should always call an IT company. Many like to dive into performing an upgrade themselves without understanding how to do so properly.
I deal with systems that someone tried upgrading with the wrong version of an operating system and are now stuck with a blinking cursor or the dreadful message “Unable to find boot device.”
Now with an operating system that can’t be used or returned and a computer that doesn’t work, they call an IT company to not only install the right version but to find out they have deleted & formatted all of the family photos. Data recovery is not cheap either, starting around $350 it can go all the way into thousands and thousands of dollars.
With all of this being said, we understand that it can get expensive and big box companies can leave you feeling disconnected.
At Mr. IT, we work with you, not just for you. We stride on building a friendship with our customers and making sure they are completely happy with the work at a great price!
If you’re looking to do an upgrade, you don’t have to do IT alone. Give us a call or visit our website today!
