Don’t be quick to blame age for your varicose veins.
“It’s not strictly a matter of getting older.”
Varicose veins develop when there is a malfunction in tiny valves that regulate blood circulation in the legs.
When you stand or sit for extended periods, muscle contractions are required to recirculate the blood in your legs against the force of gravity. The tiny valves work to move the blood back up the legs through the veins to the heart.
If the valve structure is damaged, blood will accumulate, often in the calf region. With nowhere for the blood to go, the veins get larger and larger over time. Eventually you see them as bulging vein right under your skin.
Abdominal strain—heavy lifting, pregnancy, obesity are amongst the factors that can cause Varicose Veins. Age is also a major factor causing varicose veins to develop. And, many cases are a matter of heredity.
In any case, the unsightly appearance of varicose veins is only one of the concerns. The more important concerns is what the varicose veins can do to your legs if not treated.
If you have pain in the legs, have it checked.
The pain will be a sort of aching or cramping. You might experience swelling in the ankles or itching in the calves.
Ignoring a painful varicose vein is not a good idea.
If you have any of the following symptoms:
- Leg pain or aches
- Leg swelling or edema
- Restless Legs or easily fatigued legs
- Leg throbbing, leg spasms or leg ulcers
- Skin discoloration
It’s time to see a doctor.
How do you know if you have Varicose Veins?
The testing for this condition is a comprehensive Ultrasound Duplex examination of deep and superficial veins of lower extremities. This is to be done by a highly specialized ultrasound technician.
