My mother and I started Home Instead Senior Care in 2001. Our first office in Chesterland lead the way for non-medical senior care services at home in Geauga County.
We quickly realized that we were offering, for the first time, a much needed compassionate solution for aging seniors and their families to remain at home independently and thriving. We were both registered nurses, and our senior care background helped us to coordinate and manage care for hundreds of families throughout the Geauga County area.
Over the years, I have been blessed with hundreds of thank-you notes. I have felt so proud and fulfilled reading and witnessing the difference we made in so many lives. It is difficult to put into words. This has been our life’s work…
It is funny how you forget about yourself when your mind is on others. But, then life has a way of sneaking up on you…it happened to me last month. My retired mom calls me and tells me she is having bilateral knee replacements. I quickly change plans to be in Florida with her through her surgery.
As I stay in the hospital with her those few days after the surgery, I am quickly brought to reality as I see my own aging mom. Tears fill my eyes as my mom sleeps that first night in the hospital, and I realize that life is fleeting, and how much I love her. I am quickly in the caregiving mode of helping mom and dad navigate the heath system…picking a nursing home for rehab, medical equipment, pain management but most of all just loving on mom and keeping her spirits up.
As I watch my own daughter wheel my mom in her wheelchair down the hall and assume the role of caregiver, I behold our next generation of caregiver being molded. Mom is doing better today although I am filled with guilt that I am not doing more and by her side each day as she recovers. To all the daughters, I have witnessed care for their moms through the years…thank you for your examples of selfless love!
Caring for my mom has been a privilege and an honor. This is the same feeling I get when we care for each senior at Home Instead Senior Care.
As said, “THERE ARE ONLY FOUR KINDS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN CAREGIVERS, THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY CAREGIVERS, THOSE WHO WILL BE CAREGIVERS, AND THOSE WHO WILL NEED CAREGIVERS” — Rosalynn Carter.
This Mother’s Day…All of us at Home Instead Senior Care send our love to all our moms we love so dearly and thank you for the privilege of caring for them.
