Each one of us has a magical key for unlocking the gifts of our soul: Our body!
No matter what type of body we have, or how we feel about it, this sacred substance offers us the means to access the fullness of the present moment simply by tuning in. Being present, in turn, eventually guides us to the still center, where our deepest sources of inspiration can be found.
A tiny baby first orients itself to the world via the sense of touch, our most basic and foundational sense. Through safe, loving touch, we first connect with other humans, thereby increasing both our emotional resilience and our chances of survival.
For all mammals, touch is the special ingredient that allows us to thrive. A famous experiment in the 1950s, known as “Harlow’s monkeys,” showed that baby monkeys separated at birth from their mother preferred a cloth substitute mother to a wire one, even when most of the milk they needed came from the wire substitute. The cloth mother could calm them. The wire mother could not.
Human babies, too, show decided gains from being held and touched: preterm babies who received just five days of massage therapy gained 48% more weight than control infants in one 2003 study. Other studies show that babies sleep better, have greater disease resistance, develop superior motor and intellectual skills, and cry and fuss less when touched and massaged regularly.
Safe, nurturing touch matters to us at any age. Touch grounds us and allows us to experience our body as the miraculous place where we interact with the wonder that is our life.
