It’s time for another round of holiday gift buying, and if you’re like most people, you’re looking for something a little different this year.

Why not consider dance lessons? They’re perfect for both single friends and couples. They start a person off on a new hobby (just in time for the New Year!); nudge them towards a bit more exercise and lead to new friends and a new skill.

They’re also convenient to purchase. You can find gift certificates on dance studio websites and often purchase them on the phone.

A few tips:

SINGLE VS COUPLE

If you’re purchasing for a single friend, be sure the studio accommodates them. Some places, such as dance classes at community colleges, require a partner. At my studio, however, about 65% of our students are single. They dance with instructors on private lessons and they rotate partners in group classes.

FAIR RATES

While group classes require a per-person charge, private lessons should cost the same whether you are single or bringing a partner.

KNOWLEDGEABLE INSTRUCTORS

Be sure the instructors are knowledgeable in a variety of dances. A salsa specialist is great if you want to fine-tune that particular dance; but ballroom instructors should be comfortable teaching many types of dances. Think of Dancing With The Stars…those instructors can twirl through a waltz just as easily as they can shake through a samba. The more dances you learn; the more time you can spend on the dance floor!

AGE

Ask about the average age of the students to be sure your gift recipient will be comfortable there. Some studios skew older; some a bit younger.
