Toxins happen. Food-based toxins stemming from allergies and sensitivities or from addictive substances such as caffeine and alcohol, plus preservatives, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and additives in our food represent our most significant areas of exposure.
Plenty of additional sources abound, however. To a degree, we exercise control over what food we will eat, but other contaminants sneakily evade conscious choice.
Like it or not, the air we breathe, the water we drink (or bathe in), the furnishings, building materials, cleansers and pesticides surrounding us in our homes, schools, and places of work, all represent potential sources of hazard. (You’ve heard about Flint, Michigan’s water problems, no doubt.)
Sadly, a pure, unpolluted environment being rare these days, it makes sense periodically to detoxify. We may wish to limit intake of junk, while cleansing accumulated build-up from our system.
With so many harmful substances out there, what can I, as a massage therapist, do to help you get rid of some of them?
Mechanical pumping of lymph fluid via massage acts to cleanse congested lymph nodes, improving circulation throughout the body and speeding up elimination of waste. Better and more sleep, facilitated by relaxing massage, allow the body to regenerate more quickly, helping organs that clean and filter the blood such as the liver and kidneys. (A well-rested brain might also be said to help us by way of making better choices for ourselves!) De-stressing our lives and improving self-esteem through healthy, nurturing touch supports us to reach our highest potential—in a win-win, healthy feedback loop set in motion by massage!
